Stick Figure Productions, Shining Light on the Dark Side of Reality Programming…

By Madame Margherite

Stick Figure Productions brings a flare of humanity to the world of reality programing. While many people believe that real entertaining drama is found on the shores of Jersey or in the homes of former mobsters, some recognize that real drama is directly related to less mainstream ways of life. With shows like Amish in the City and the recently premiered Amish: Out of Order, Stick Figure sheds light on a community so devoted to God and tightly bonded as a family that viewers can’t help but be inspired to do something positive.

Granted, much of the entertainment comes from watching people living a life that members of today’s urban culture not only grasp to understand but also find hard to believe is possible but that’s also why shows like this are so inspiring. As American’s and especially New Yorkers, we tend to seek out and appreciate diversity and the Amish are as far outside “the box” as they come.

Another eye opening Stick Figure production is Tent City, USA. An epidemic in our country that so many people choose to ignore and pass off as a nuisance is the rising population of homeless individuals on our streets, in our alleys, and under our bridges. Like many states, Tennessee has entire communities of people who live in tents or boxes due to economic circumstances and in April of this year Stick Figure productions proudly broadcasted the lives of these folks on OWN.

Revealing a bright side to something dark and taboo seems to be the theme, if not goal, of owner Steven Cantor and partner Daniel Laikind; they certainly managed that with Tent City, USA. The show displays a sense of indestructible spirit and undefeatable ingenuity in people pushed up against the wall and forced into hopeless corners. It’s programing like that which make people believe in themselves but also force one to appreciate the warm couch they sit on and flat television they watch as such programs air. The same goes for Guardian Angels, a show which features regular men who venture out onto the toughest streets to combat crime and make peace among chaos so that abiding citizens of the community can simply sleep soundly and walk the streets safely much like real life superheroes.

Finally an upcoming program that is sure to carry on the legacy of Stick Figure’s cold hard reality is a drama titled American Gypsies. While half of the country can be considered a bunch of rolling stones or rebels without a cause, no one comes close to a gypsy. For those of you who don’t know, a gypsy is not a fortune telling thief that goes from one town to the next scamming everyone. In fact the gypsy community is a tightly knit, incredibly loyal and surprisingly traditional group of people who stand firm to what they believe in. Much like the Amish, we have much to learn from our fellow residents the American Gypsies.

Also, be sure to check out some of Stick Figure’s films including Unraveled, a film surrounding the biggest Ponzi scheme in history; following not Bernie Madoff but rather a very deeply involved attorney few have heard of, Marc Dreier. In case you were wondering, yes, as always there is a positive spin in this film as well but you’ll have to see it to experience it.

Counting of the Omer Hip-Hop Style…

By Madame Margherite

On Wednesday, April 25th 2012 an ensemble of seven Jewish performers put on a show at the Museum of Jewish Heritage that broke boundaries. Hip-Hop Reflections, hosted by some of New York’s most flavorful artists including Doron Lev, Rabbi Darkside and 5Pointz’ resident beat boxer Grey Matter, represented the seven weeks of observance and reflection following Passover; a time known as the Omer.

The performance included freestyle, hip-hop monologues, beat boxing and passionate yet comedic spoken word poetry. Unlike anything we’ve seen before this show brought together two cultures that don’t seem to shine together to the public often enough: Hip-Hop and Jewish spirituality. While urban culture has a reputation for being rough around the edges this performance proved that there is a deeply spiritual side to this form of expression.

As Jessica Flietman represented herself as the “Jewish Ambassador” rolling out a slew of poetic comedy addressing many American stereotypes the intimate crowd bellowed out with laughter while a much deeper more serious take was presented by Andrew Gutterson aka Grey Matter. With great pride the youthful beat boxer commanded the stage with a strong presence and a soulful message explaining what his Jewish heritage means to him and how it affected his upbringing. Holding nothing back he shared with us his experiences as an adopted child meeting his biological mother for the first time and how hip-hip played into every moment leading down that path.

Rabbi Darkside, as usual, charmed the crowd as well with his mature stature and smooth words of education binding Jewish history and urban culture together. Alongside him, the rest of the crew, Dyalekt, Michelle Slonim and Tranquill put on an amazing show. For any Jew this was a great way to begin the seven week observance of the Omer and hopefully this will become an annual event. Now is a good time to bridge the gap between the streets and our spirits.

Mariella’s Session at Session73; Freestylin’ on a Tuesday Night…

By Madame Margherite

Two of 5Pointz’ more supportive entities came together last night to produce one incredible evening of food, music and entertainment. Facilitated by Marie of M Events, singer Mariella took the stage at Session73, a venue in NYC which has hosted numerous events and fundraisers for 5Pointz, and delivered a much anticipating audience with the finest jazz sprinkled with a dash of hip-hop that the city has to offer.

While this was not a 5Pointz event, it did cultivate a union of friends; 5Pointz and crew, as well as many others, came out to send love and give back some of the support that Mariella and her band has so generously given us over the last decade. The performance was about as live as it gets; as performers Rabbi Darkside and Grey Matter joined the songstress and ensemble on stage to contribute some beatboxing and freestyle skills, the crowd chimed in my chanting “Freestylin’ on a Tuesday night”, an ode to the 10th year anniversary of Freestyle Mondays hosted by Mariella and Illspokinn and co-founded by Rabbi Darkside.

A huge crowd from HSS also joined the audience adding to the gracious atmosphere. It was a real pleasure seeing such a diverse group of people delight in the unique sounds of Mariella and all those who occupied the stage. But what would a night like this be without art? There was that too. Long time artist See TF captured the beauty and essence of the talented singer in a large black and white portrait that he painted live during the event. The piece was simply breathtaking and the expression on Mariella’s face when the work was finally unveiled was priceless.

Once again Session73 has hosted an outstanding evening that gave some much needed downtime to the hard workers and supporters of art and hip-hop in general. Perhaps, this could become a regular thing.

Yamaha Boats Make a Splash in 2012…

By Madame Margherite

As usual, Bay Harbor Motors is proud to present to you this year’s Yamaha Jet Boats. So far it appears that the highlights are the 2012 Yamaha 242 Limited S, the 2012 Yamaha AR210, and the 2012 Yamaha SX190 available for the first time this year. Here’s just a simple breakdown of what we have in store for you today.

Every year Yamaha’s top of the line Jet Boat, the 242 Limited S, sells out faster than the manufacturer can produce them. This year, we can easily predict the same. Bay Harbor Motors, in just the first month of the year has already assigned a quarter of our inventory for this boat to customers. With all the features this boat offers, you won’t need a summer beach house because you can practically live on the water instead. For the comfort of you and your family, the 2012 Yamaha 242 Limited S has seating for 11 passengers, an integrated swim platform, storage compartments big enough to fit a porta-potty, satellite ready AM/FM radio, 8 premium marine speakers, a fresh water shower, and a stylish arch finished in black to accentuate this boat even more than last year.

As for the engines housed in the 2012 Yamaha 242 Limited S, you’ll find Twin 180hp 4-Stroke H.O. engines bringing you over 50mph at top speed. It’s the largest boat that Yamaha produces, and is available in two sharp colors this year, Black or Champagne so you can’t be missed when out on the water. This is a boat you can spot from a mile away, and you’ll need to because this speed demon will be under your nose within 2 minutes when coming your way.

If you’re the medium size type and don’t really want a 24ft boat, there’s a smaller yet equally as fun and luxurious. The 2012 Yamaha AR210 is a lovely option, available in black with an aluminum wakeboard tower. At three feet shorter than the 242 Limited S, the 2012 Yamaha AR210 seats 9 passengers with maximum comfort and of course has a swim platform, radio, speakers and many other features to enhance your experience on the water.

And if you’re looking for the most basic of Yamaha boats this year, we can far exceed your expectations with the 2012 Yamaha SX190 — debuting for the first time this year, this 19ft boat is ideal for boaters piloting alone or with the light company of upto 7 additional passengers. Yamaha’s SX models do not have an arch or wakeboard tower, however the AR models which mirror the SX models of similar class, do come with the arch. So if you love the 2012 Yamaha SX190 you may also want to check out the 2012 Yamaha AR190 for a slight upgrade.

The options on Yamaha boats are endless, and there’s something for everyone with every boat. Each Yamaha Jet Boats come standard with Bimini top, courtesy deck lighting, cup holders, and much, much more. Bay Harbor Motors can fit you into the boat that’s right for you, and going over all features and benefits with you is our pleasure. When coming in to purchase your dream boat, ask about extended warranty and our available insurance options.

By Madame Margherite

Boat show season is upon us, and as it is every year, seeing our customers check out the new line ups of our Yamaha boats & Waverunners, Sea Doo boats & Personal Watercrafts and Kawasaki Jet Skis is always a pleasure. We would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation once again for all the love and support received from our customers. For years our loyal customers from all over the country, especially those from New York, have been coming out to see us at the shows to check out what’s new for the year. Just to recap what was featured at the show, here are some of the hot machines on the line up this year.

In Yamaha boats we saw the latest and most luxurious of Jet boats, the 2012 Yamaha 242 Limited S. This year, appropriately available in Gold, this boat really took things up a notch by accentuating the design with a black toned stainless steel foldable tower, and the boat itself is available in either a striking black with gold detail, or in a golden champagne color with black detail. As always this boat comes standard with over a dozen amenities that make this boat so plush. These features include a freshwater shower, Bimini top, snap in carpet, satellite-ready AM/FM stereo with iPod Player and a handheld floating remote just to name a few.

2012 Yamaha Waverunners turned heads as well with redesigned models such as the 2012 Yamaha VX Cruiser, 2012 Yamaha VX Deluxe and another popular model this year is the 2012 FX Cruiser SHO. All of which are three seaters, but a two seater is available as well, simply check out the 2012 Yamaha FZR.

In terms of what Sea Doo has in store for this year, we have in our showroom a beautiful 2012 Sea Doo GTI SE 130, the popular 2012 Sea Doo RXP-X 260 with 260 horsepower, and another machine with 260 horsepower is the 2012 Sea Doo RXT iS 260 which turned heads this year at the show. Also featured at the show were some of Sea Doo’s 2012 boats.

Most notably, the 2012 Sea Doo 230 Challenger SE available with either twin 155hp fuel injected engines, twin 215hp fuel injected supercharged engines or even twin 260hp fuel injected high output engines. This 23 foot boat is a blast on the water and can fit your family and friends comfortably for a day on the bay.

Last but not least, Bay Harbor Motors is always proud to display Kawasaki Jet Skis, and for this year we have the reinvented 2012 Kawasaki Ultra 300X. Last year this machine flew off the showroom, and this year we anticipate the same. For a closer look at any Yamaha, Sea Doo, or Kawasaki boats or watercrafts stop by our showroom and as always we’ll be happy in assisting you to find which is best for you.

Thanks again for all your support, we’re here to return the gesture.

GSXRs and Ninjas and Spyders, Oh My!

By Madame Margherite

It’s bike show season, and the recent International Motorcycle Show hosted at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City was a hit. The venue hall was packed with Bay Harbor Motors veteran Kawasaki and Can-Am customers and since we are looking forward to a future with Suzuki customers, we were happy to meet all the GXSR & Hayabusa riders that came out this weekend.

As always, the Kawasaki booth was flooded with high performance riders checking out the brand new and improved 2012 Kawasaki ZX-14R. Another motorcycle that raised much attention was the 2012 Kawasaki Ninja 650R; a popular bike among those who wish to ride in a less aggressive upright position but still have the weightlessness of a lighter bike as opposed to the 2012 Kawasaki Ninja 1000, which also is an upright motorcycle but is much heavier.

The Can-Am Spyder booth was also a fun section to walk through, especially for those who straddle the fence between two wheels and four wheels. The unique breed of motorcycle with two wheels in the front and one in the back always grabs attention. This year, Can-Am featured the much anticipated 2012 Spyder RTS Limited in Brown and Tan with the matching trailer to pull behind. Naturally the sporty models were out as well. In both Green and Red the 2012 Spyder RSS were hard to walk away from.

And at last, being that we at Bay Harbor Motors have an interest in Suzuki, we paid extra attention to what such customers were checking out. Finding that consumers were particularly fascinated by the 2012 Suzuki GSXR 1000, and of course the 2012 GSXR 600, we are excited about getting our fans on the road on these beauties.

Thanks to everyone who came out. It was a real pleasure seeing all of our customers new and veteran. We are here to answer any and all your questions, and as you know our loyalty to you is as solid as your loyalty to us. We appreciate your business and promise to always go above and beyond to provide you with the highest quality sales and service. We hope to see you in our shop soon.

Happy riding!

Peace,

Watercraft Shipping and Winterization Tips and Tricks

By Madame Margherite

The season for swimming has come to an end unless you’re one of those polar bear type people, in which case the season is just beginning. But for the rest of us who like take out our jet skies, speed boats, and miscellaneous vehicles, right about now is when we need to start thinking about winterization. It’s never fun and sometimes costly but it’s an important necessity that must be carried out. Here are some tips to properly winterizing your craft and watercraft shipping tips.

First things first, you want to maintenance and preserve the following three components of your vehicle: your fuel tank, your engine, and your battery. Servicing your fuel tank is easy. Basically all you have to do is top it off while adding some fuel stabilizer to the gas. That does exactly what it sounds like; it stabilizes the gas preventing it from going bad over the winter due to fluctuating temperatures. The fuel in your tank is like any other oil based fluid and can get thick and mucky when temperatures drop; this is definitely a process you want to avoid.

If you enjoy your water sport in a marina of some sort chances are they have a department that will shrink wrap your craft for you. If not, than you can simply purchase the appropriate cover and do this your self. It’s less effective than having a professional do it for you, but it’s good enough if done properly. When you’re ready to move your craft contact your trusted auto transport company and they’ll take care of the rest for you.

Car transporters don’t only deal with cars, they deal with all types of vehicles and are used to watercraft shipping of all sizes, including boats. It’s not wise to try and try watercraft shipping yourself. You can run into a lot of problems such as safely securing the craft to your vehicle, and transporting it without suffering exterior damages.

Ask your car transport company to arrange watercraft shipping. All auto transporters have shipping services that they offer, and they will know the best solutions for watercraft shipping. You’ll save money by going through your car transport company, and you’ll be able to rest easy until the spring. Keep your watercraft warm, and enjoy the winter.

Can-Am Spyders Climb the Charts in 2012…

By Margherite Cermak

There’s no question that Can-Am Spyders are the most radical machines on the market. The unique design, and optimal power are enough to set these bikes aside but the looks of them sky rocket them to the top of the charts. Last year, Can-Am out did the industry when they introduced the Spyder RTS Limited Edition to consumers in the market. This sport touring version of the more aggressive Can-Am, the Spyder RSS was featured in Pearl White and sold out across the country due to its unique comfort features including a passenger lumbar seat, heated handlebars, and 144 liters of storage to accommodate long trips.

This year Bay Harbor Motors is happy to say that Can-Am has repeated history by presenting the market yet again with gorgeous Spyders, both Sport and Touring models available in either manual or automatic. The colors are signature as well this year; the 2012 Can-Am Spyder RT Limited this year comes in a burnt umber brown color with dark tan seats accented with chrome around the exhaust tip, heat shield, mirrors and the six-spoke front wheels. This bad boy comes fully equipped with the Garmin Zumo 660 GPS with Bluetooth capability, as much storage space as last year, and this time has a travel cover.

The engines on 2012 Can-Am Spyders are just as powerful as always. In both the 2012 Can-Am Spyder RSS and RTS there’s a BRP-Rotax 998cc V-Twin engine that can carry these bikes anywhere you may want to go. As Bay Harbor Motors caters to both the long distance and around-the-town riders they also stand behind BRP’s 2012 Can-Am Spyder RSS. The options for this model are as vast as can be.

One of the most popular features about these versatile machines is that they are highly customizable. For the RSS models that don’t come standard with passenger back rests you may add one, as well as saddle bags for additional storage, grips and pipes for a little extra flair. The 2012 Can-Am Spyder RSS is available in hot colors as well; running with an exotic theme this year BRP Can-Am has made these bikes available in Neutron Green, Can-Am Red, and of course Steel Black Metallic.

These three wheelers dominate the road and never fail to turn heads. The attention these machines get when spotted in the street gets higher every year. BRP has really stepped it up this year yet again and 2012 Can-Am Spyders are bound to make some noise among riders. Bay Harbor Motors can certainly accommodate any purchase, any order and any customization available on these bad boys.

Ride happy with comfort you’d find in a convertible and the freedom of the open road—Bay Harbor Motors and Can-Am offer it all.

Peace,

Plow Through This Winter on a 2012 Suzuki ATV...

By Madame Margherite

For those who know how to make the best of the winter instead of hibernating with the bears, Staten Island Suzuki is rolling the full line of 2012 Suzuki ATVs onto the showroom floor. With both sport and utility All Terrain Vehicles there’s a nice variety to choose from. For plowing snow and performing winter chores Suzuki brings you the 2012 KingQuad 750AXi available with Power Steering. For lighter chores and winter recreation, the KingQuad 500AXi is a nice option, also available with Power Steering and for the wild child in you there is of course Suzuki’s sportiest quad, the 2012 Suzuki QuadSport Z400.

All the Suzuki Quads are good looking, but the 2012 Suzuki KingQuad 750AXi is a fierce machine. With or without Power Steering this ATV can conquer the trickiest terrains and can get the toughest jobs done. With a 722cc fuel-injected engine this beast weighs in as the heaviest of the KingQuads and displays excellent performance.

Another solid Quad Staten Island Suzuki recommends is the 2012 Suzuki KingQuad 500AXi; a bit smaller but just as aesthetically pleasing and just as tough. This machine is agile, versatile, and comes with significant power, more than enough to do some snowy trial riding and the Power Steering provides more responsive handling. The engine housed in this machine is a 493cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, four-stroke designed for a wide powerband providing strong performance. All the KingQuads this year are available in Flame Red, Terra Green, and Black. And of course both the 2012 Suzuki KingQuad 750AXi and the 2012 Suzuki 500AXi are available with Power Steering for that extra control.

If you’re not really looking to work this winter and you just want to play, Staten Island Suzuki has a real sporty option for you. The 2012 Suzuki QuadSport Z400 Limited is the way to go if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush to keep you warm this season. With a 398cc 4-stroke, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled Dual Overhead Cam engine, this machine is lightening quick, incredibly agile, and packs a punch with the amount of power it puts out. Adding to the performance is the liquid-cooling system featuring high-capacity radiator and thermostatically controlled cooling fan that provides consistent engine operating temperature allowing the engine to function most efficiently.

So this year take advantage of what the market offers, whether you’re picking up your first quad, upgrading or switching gears into a different model Staten Island Suzuki, a direct branch of Bay Harbor Motors, has what you’re looking for and will match you with the machine that’s right for you.

Ride hard folks!

Staten Island Suzuki Launches 2012 Motorcycle and Scooter Line…

By Madame Margherite

Recently established Staten Island Suzuki, a branch of the pioneering Kawasaki dealership, Bay Harbor Motors, has officially launched the 2012 Suzuki Line up of motorcycles and, for the first time ever, scooters. In the past, Bay Harbor Motors has been limited to bikes, boats, watercrafts and ATVs, but this year scooters are also on the market for the family owned dealership.

Due to popular demand, Staten Island Suzuki didn’t hesitate to carry scooters along with their newly acquired Suzuki product line. The Suzuki Burgman comes in two models, the 650 Exec and the 400 with ABS.

The 2012 Suzuki Burgman 650 Exec sets the styling standard this year with stunning aerodynamic bodywork. Suitable for both the streets and highway, this scooter is comfortable, lightweight and agile featuring a passenger backrest, Anti-lock Break System, a liquid-cooled 638cc 8-valve twin-cylinder engine, and plenty of storage space. The 2012 Suzuki Burgman 400 ABS has a slightly smaller engine, a 400cc, 4-stroke, single-cylinder, fuel-injected Suzuki engine but comes with the same comfort and performance.

In the bike line up, it’s a given that the Hayabusa is in high demand; after all this beast comes standard with a whapping 1340cc in-line 4 cylinder fuel injected, liquid cooled engine with 16-valves and Twin Swirl Combustion Chambers prompting phenomenal power, but the GSX-R1000 is another hot bike to look at this year. For 2012 Suzuki GSX-R1000s have improved throttle response, increased power & acceleration at mid-range engine speeds and better fuel economy. Also this machine has reduced its weight by over four pounds, an important factor for performance riders, by refining the chassis, suspension, and breaking systems. Available in signature blue, and naturally, black.

For the cruisers out there, Staten Island Suzuki puts on display the 2012 Suzuki Boulevard. With engine sizes ranging from 650cc to 1783cc there’s a Boulevard for everyone. Featured at the top of the line, the 2012 Suzuki Boulevard M109R Limited Edition comes in a stunning new Metallic Triton Blue and Glass Splash White color scheme and houses a giant 1783cc, 8-valve, 54 degree, liquid-cooled fuel injected V-Twin engine.

The smallest of the Suzuki cruisers is the 2012 Suzuki Boulevard S40; housing a 652cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled four-stroke engine this is still a big bike. It’s a sexy one too, available in Metallic Fox Orange, or Pearl Mirage White and Metallic Veil Silver, all of which are available now at Staten Island Kawasaki. So regardless of which Boulevard you decide to roll on, your destination is just a smooth purchase away.

Kawasaki Bites Back with Big Bikes in 2012…

By Madame Margherite

We at Staten Island Kawasaki know that big bikes have always been a big deal in the motorcycle industry, but this year Ninjas have really come back better than ever trumping all models which have come before. Redesigned and reengineered Kawasaki has presented the market with substantial improvements made to their line of Super Sport bikes; most notably in the Ninja ZX-14R, the Ninja 1000 (commonly confused with the Ninja ZX-10R) and of course the z1000.

“Witness the Phenomenon” says manufacturer when debuting the 2012 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14R, a steep and dramatic upgrade from the 2011 1400cc monster of a machine. This year’s version features a sleeker, more aerodynamic body that distributes heat throughout the bike more evenly forcing it away from the rider making high performance racing more comfortable.

The ZX-14R keeps its signature side fairing fin design, this year with accentuating the lines for an even more dramatic look, but has reshaped the seat offering riders more thigh support—a valuable feature for competitive riding.

Power wise, this bike houses the same Inline-Four engine as last year’s model with displacement increased through a 4mm stroke addition giving this Superbike a whopping 1441cc to jump off of. The combustion chambers are reshaped along with the intake ports maximizing performance, and the camshafts feature revised profiles with a reinforced cam chain, allowing the engine to withstand higher rpm levels. Also, the pistons have gained strength and shed weight making the 2012 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14R the most competitive machine in the market.

Another Super Sport bike seducing us this year is the 2012 Kawasaki Ninja 1000. “Inspired by the track, bred for the street” this beauty took home last year’s place as “Motorcycle of the Year” and may do the same in 2012. While the Ninja 1000 was only born a year ago it has rolled out blazing. With optional ABS, Kawasaki signature Inline-Four engine, reduced vibration, and a stylish 4-into-2 catalyzer-equipped exhaust system that reduces emissions and gives the Ninja 1000 a pleasing growl without making too much noise.

The 2012 Ninja 1000 maintains its stunningly sexy look and upright aggressive riding position but has utilized effective engineering decreasing weight and increasing performance. Using the latest most advanced technology in lightweight production the Ninja 1000's chassis rolls on lightweight six-spoke Super sport rims, the single-shock system features a damper mounted nearly horizontally above the swing-arm for optimal stability, mass centralization and heat resistance. Additionally, this Superbike uses race-spec brakes - 300mm petal-type rotors up front squeezed by ultra-rigid radially mounted calipers fed hydraulic pressure by an equally race-spec radial pump master cylinder.

In English… Ninja 1000s look good, ride smooth, and stop on a dime. There’s no way to ignore this bike.  At Staten Island Kawasaki, New Yorkers rave about the power this bike puts out.

Right alongside the Ninja 1000 is its naked sibling the Z1000. The 2012 Kawasaki Z1000 has added some aesthetic details this year just allowing it to stand next to the other Supersports on the block. Available in either Candy Burnt Orange or Metallic Spark Black, this bike is featuring a low-mount front cowl that slopes back, accentuates the Z1000s stylishly sleek design and line-beam headlights integrated into the angled cowl gives her a futuristic look. The shapely fuel tank, flared on both sides, killing two birds with one stone, is easy to grip with your knees and trim at the back providing a snug fit all while being aesthetically pleasing.

Comfort has been met as well; the seat on this 2012 Kawasaki Z1000 is low and narrow at the front for reachable ground contact and flows aggressively to the rear contributing to this machines athletic shape.

Naturally, a motorcycle is only as big as its engine; powered from the 1043cc twin cam16-valve Inline-four it’s undeniable that this bike has power and can perform. The liquid-cooled, high-compression motor features a long stroke of 56mm for instant power, is fuel injected and has a six-speed transmission. This motorcycle was designed for low profile, sporty riding on the real-world streets.

Regardless of which Ninja fits you best, there’s no mistake that this year Kawasaki puts up a fight both on the track and in the streets and at Staten Island Kawasaki we make it possible for you to “Let the good times roll”.

Peace,

How to Pick a Shipping Company…

By Madame Margherite

Transporting a vehicle isn’t as cut and dry of a task as say, shipping a birthday present through the mail. Your car needs to be handled with care from the moment it is picked up, to the moment it is delivered. Today there are thousands of companies in the United States that transport cars, but be aware that only a portion of those companies are legit. Over looking some of the key components that make a transporter a quality choice may mean never seeing your vehicle again.

The first step is actually searching for a company to deliver your car safely to its destination. While most people often turn to the Yellow Pages or their local directory this may not be the best choice for this type of service. Listing a company with a local directory usually is a no-questions-asked process that’s as simple as submitting your contact information and paying a fee. What you want is a company that has been screened and approved by the experts. Companies listed with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) are always a good choice, especially if they have a high rating.

Another smart way to search for the right company is by doing a Google search. While most of us think of Google as just a search engine, the truth is Google pays very close attention to the web pages they display and if a company turns up at the top of a search that means that it has a high Alexa rank, good reviews, unique content and is approved by the Google experts. This is a sign that the company owners pay close attention to the quality of their business and work hard to maintain it.

Keep in mind you don’t necessarily want a local transporting company, national companies are ideal. Just because your dispatcher answers the phone in Phoenix doesn’t mean that company can’t ship your car from Florida to Texas. Auto shipping companies usually own their own car carriers but also broker deals with drivers outside of their circle. This is not a bad thing as long as the drivers they use have the proper trucks, and the proper insurance to cover all the cars that they transport in a single route.

When calling a shipping company there are three very important questions to ask. The first thing you want to know is what type of truck your car will be carried on. If they say a flatbed, go with someone else. Only in most cases drivers with flatbeds usually don’t have the insurance to cover your vehicle in the event of an accident. You want your car to either be shipped on an open car carrier, or an enclosed car carrier at a slightly higher price. These are trucks specifically designed to secure multiple vehicles at once.

Another extremely important question to ask is about insurance. The truck transporting your car should have enough insurance to cover all the cars it can carry at once. If there’s an accident while the truck transporting your car is in route, $20k isn’t going to cover your car’s damage. $100k is more like it. Ask about the company’s inspection policy. When using a quality transporter the driver on pick up will also be the driver on delivery. You don’t want your vehicle being handed off from one truck to another. That driver should inspect your car upon pick up, and fill out a damage report prior to leaving, and then when your car is delivered that driver will do another inspection and damage report to compare the two. If there is any additional damage on delivery insurance will cover it.

Finally you might want to know if your transporting company is licensed and bonded. While these two factors are to benefit the relationship between brokers and drivers rather than customers it’s nice to know that the auto shipping company you are choosing values relationships between themselves and all those involved in transporting your vehicle. Companies that take proper steps to ensure that all parties are covered and protected are companies that will guarantee the safe delivery of your car.

Additional Tips: Never double book an order! Double booking an order is when you place an order for one car with more than one car transporting company. Drivers are skeptical about picking up a car that is double booked because it is possible that another company may get to the pick up address first wasting time and money for the runner up. When a company can’t find a driver to pick up a car due to double booking that company is forced to drive up the price of the job making it more expensive for the customer. Double booking is something you do not want to do.

Be in touch with the driver handling your vehicle. A good auto transporting company will provide you with the driver’s contact information so that you may contact them directly. Most of the time, the driver carrying your car will call you prior to delivery, but if they don’t it doesn’t hurt to give them a call. Don’t be upset if the driver doesn’t pick up the phone on your first try, most likely they are driving, and will return your call during a rest stop.

If a company accepts credit cards it means that they have merchant account. In order to obtain a merchant account that company is highly scrutinized and investigated for illegitimacy. If they pass the test, they are a trust worthy company with a good credit history.

Your car, truck, motorcycle or boat may be one of your most valuable possessions, if you need to have one of these vehicles transported do your homework and go with the elite. Randomly picking a transporting company may lead to a heartbreaking, costly disaster. Follow these simple steps and your car will be in good hands.

Winter Activities With Your Whimsical Pooch...

By Madame Margherite

We tend to forget that during the winter our dogs don't get as much exorcise as they normally would during the warmer seasons. That's why it's important to find things for you and your pet to do when it's cold outside. Lack of exorcise can put on extra winter weight that might be hard to burn off come the spring. Also, keep in mind that fluxuating weight gain and loss could lead to some serious health risks and complications. You want to maintain a healthy lifestyle for your dog all year long, so here are some suggestions for fun in the snow with your pooch.

Dogs, like children, love to run through fresh fallen snow and while they don't make snow angels, they will still have a good time if you let them run loose through a field of snow covered grass. You might consider taking your excited pup down to the park or playground where there are slides. Lead your dog up to the top of the jungle gym and guide them down the slippery slide into a mound of snow. You may have to clear the slide first, and it might take a try or two to show your dog how to do it, but once he or she gets the hang of it they'll be running back for more.

Sledding is also fun for dogs. No, I don't mean put your dog in a sled and drag them down a hill. Dogs love to tug on things, and that makes them perfect for sled pulling. Large breeds across the world are even trained to do this professionally. If you have a child, let the child sit in the sled and encourage your family pet to take off up and down the hills of let's say a golf course. Granted, smaller breeds can't really pull large or heavy things, but they too have options.

Medium and small breeds are ideal for winter hunting, but if that's not your thing then a Frisbee will suffice just as well. Just like in the summer if you toss an item your dog loves they will chase after it, and most certainly bring it back to you. If you're fortunate enough to have a significant amount of property, or a patch of land where you can take your pet for a walk you might want to bury their favorite toy somewhere and encourage them to sniff it out. This will both exorcise your dogs concentration skills, and their bodies. Not to mention, they'll be pleased to have a reward for their efforts under the snow.

Everyday your pet should have at least twenty minutes of running or jumping around but should not exceed forty five minutes in the snow. A dog can get carried away when he or she is having fun, and my not realize that they are getting too cold. You wouldn't want to have to take your dog to the vet to treat a cold because they were outside too long. A popular source of aerobics you and your pooch can practice together inside the house is treadmill running. Many trainers use this technique to help burn off some extra energy in hyper large breed puppies. Just put your pooch paws down on the machine, and turn it on the lowest setting. Your dog will pick up what to do instinctively almost instantly.

Of course you can always reduce the risk of over exposure to the cold by picking up a nice warm doggie jacket, or some puppy snow boots. There are a number of dog accessories that will adequately protect your pet from harsh weather conditions. You definitely want to keep your dogs paws protected, especially large breeds, and you should avoid going in and out of the house or car multiple times in the day. Just like us, the constant change of temperature can cause the sniffles. More importantly never leave your dog unattended in a car or vehicle. In the summertime the inside of your car can become an air tight inferno leading to heat stroke, but in the winter that same car can become an ice box very quickly leading to hypothermia and even death.

So keep your pets safe, and healthy this winter and all that follow. While your at it, make sure that you have fun with your whimsical pet. If they see you're happy, they too will be happy.

Peace,

Classic Tricks to Keep Classic Cars Running Smoothly…

By Madame Margherite

Probably one of the most tragic mistakes car owners make is keeping their ride out of use for long periods of time. While it’s probably not wise to take your 67 Chevy on a 3,000 mile ride across country it is extremely important to take her for a spin around the block a few times at least once a month. Just like muscles, car parts get weak when out of use and must be exorcised in order to maintain endurance. Running your car frequently keep all the fluids moving lubricating any gears that may otherwise become dry or sticky.

It’s also important to keep your cars body from rusting. Rust and corrosion are irreversible problems and the older your car, the more time it has to become rusty. Storing your vehicle in a cool dry place when not in use is one simple way to prevent such damage. Also, keep an eye on the overall condition of your cars exterior; if you notice a problem spot you may want to use a rust preventative product. But keep in mind that any product used on your car must be both strong enough and mild enough not to cause additional damage accidentally.

This is especially important even with cleaning products used on painted parts of your vehicle. Know what type of paint was used to paint your car prior to choosing cleaning products, and beware that cleaning some substances off the paint may require a specific technique. Acidic materials such as bird droppings or soda must be carefully removed with the right type of cleaner. Too mild of a cleaner may cause particles in droppings to scratch the surface, and too powerful of a cleaner may take the paint right off with every wipe. Keeping a cover over your vehicle when it’s outside would prevent all these problems.

Interiors to classic cars may need special care as well. The craftsmanship that was once put into the production of what we now call a classic car simply doesn’t exist anymore so if the leather on your seat covers begins to crack you’ll need to take it to a expensive expert to get the nostalgic look you’re aiming for. So keep the inside of your car clean, out of direct sunlight, and moisturize leather and plastic coverings.

One final piece of advice is this; be gentle with things likes knobs, buttons, and locks. These simple touches add a specific feel to your vehicle, and without them they lose a little of that authenticity. If it’s hard trying to find the right hose for your car, it’s probably impossible to find the right radio knob. Take good care of your dated car and be sure to keep her classy.

New Years Doggie Resolutions...

By Madame Margherite

Every year we each make a decision to change our ways or break a habit to improve life for the better, but dogs don't realize it's New Year's and they may need help deciding what best to resolute. You as master and owner must take the leash, and show them the way. Here are some doggie resolutions you and your favorite pup can work together at making this a better year than last.

If this is your pets first New Year's celebration than you probably want their resolution to be something that will help them mature into a full grown dog either behaviorally or physically. Teething is always an issue with puppies, so maybe you can come up with a plan suitable for you and your dog on getting them the right types of objects to chew, and teaching them what not to chew. Another important factor of growing up is obedience. You may want to pick two or three commands you want your dog to remember for life, and set aside a little time each week practicing these commands, rewarding them with treats every time they get it right and obey.

Perhaps going potty outside is an issue for your pup? If so, that gradually help them get over their timidness by reinforcing comfort, thus encouraging them to do their business outside instead of on a Wee-Wee pad. Finally, puppies need to socialize with other dogs and people outside of those in your family circle. You may want to help socialize your dog and plan some outdoor-social activities for you and your pet to help greet them into the world around you. All perfectly suitable resolutions for a young and growing puppy.

If your best furry friend is already beyond their developing years than perhaps you may want to take a different approach to your pets needs, and focus on their health. Just like us, sometimes a dog needs a diet too. As a dog eases into their adult years it's important to have a strict feeding routine with specific portions to maintain a perfect body weight. Obesity is just as dangerous for a dog as it is for a human. If your dog doesn't have weight issues, then perhaps you can commit yourself to their grooming upkeep. Most dogs don't like baths and fur-cuts but it is a necessity and perhaps this year you can help make it a more common activity, and perhaps your dog could get used to it. An increase in play, and exorcise are also some suggestions you may want to consider.

Elderly dogs may need help figuring out what their New Year's resolution should be also. Despite their experience and wisdom, they still need that extra push to get their imaginations going. As a dog gets older it becomes more important to enforce and maintain routine. You may want to do this through mild activities such as having your pet go for an after dinner stroll with you, or having them do a specific trick every night. This will help them focus and will strengthen their memories. Tricks or exorcises using their vision or hearing are always beneficial as age wares these senses down.

Since your pet is getting up there in age, perhaps your decided resolution is more along the lines of giving your beloved pet some extra attention or special treatment like buying them some dog accessories or doggie sweaters just to let them know how much you appreciate their years of loyalty to you. Or perhaps you want to play with them more, creating more good times to remember for the both of you. Don't forget the camera when you do have special events though. More practical resolutions may involve an upgraded nutrition regimen including vitamins, or keeping an eye on claw and fur growth.

Whatever stage of the game your pet is at, remember that they are a part of the family, and so you want to include them in all your holiday celebrations and traditions in some way. Either way, they will have as much fun as you will, and they'll love you for the attention. So this year show love, and achieve your goals while helping your pet achieve theirs. Have a happy New Year, you and the dog!

Peace,

Jamel Shabazz; Reflections of Hip Hop, Graffiti, and Urban Beauty at 5Pointz…

By Madame Margherite

A little over a year ago two creative forces came together in a collaboration of mediums at the House of Art. The gallery show was called “Reflections of Hip Hop” and featured a series of framed photographs taken by legendary photographer, Jamel Shabazz and hung directly across from paintings done by illustrator Frank Morrison that mirror Jamel’s work.

Both the paintings and photographs are a historical account of the rise of Hip Hop. The predominantly black and white pictures were taken during the 80’s when graffiti was still considered pure vandalism by all except the ones producing it. However, Jamel truly captured the beauty of this medium by adding a human element to the work. One photograph featured a man with his hair half braided and the rest a-fro rolling a blunt while standing in front of a graffiti style mural of Jesus Christ. The irony is gravitating.

Another example of Jamel incorporating graff and history is present in a photograph of a young couple embracing each other affectionately on a train saturated with tags and illustrations all throughout the car. Jamel explains that utilizing graffiti in his photographs helps bring forth the tone and urban feel of his timeline of hip hop material. For his more recent work, in the past decade or so, Jamel has quite often used 5Pointz as a backdrop for his photography.

When referring to the graffiti Mecca Jamel tells us that not only has the building served as prop for his material but that many times he has been inspired by the ever changing art on the museum’s walls. The external art prompts the creation of many of his works.

“The ripple effect that 5Pointz has on today’s artistic culture is perfectly clear” Jamel exclaims. The exhibit at HOA reflects that beyond doubt. Illustrator and fine artist, Frank Morrison, one of America’s top urban artists created an entire gallery of paintings that were influenced down to the tiniest detail by the photographs taken by Shabazz; photographs directly and quite obviously inspired by 5Pointz and aerosol art in general.
Urban art is of great importance because it gives our generation of youths a voice; a voice that can, does, and will continue to make differences in the world. It’s up to us to insure that such a message be delivered.

The truth is that 5Pointz is indeed ever changing, and every mural there is eventually painted over. While some see this as contradiction to the efforts of the preservation of the building this element of change is one of the many beauties of this artistic haven. The constant change and rebirth of art is a reflection of the constant and also ever changing world which we live in; just as each mural is replaced by one more beautiful, more colorful than the one before, we hope that each change in life is more productive than the one prior.

Artists such as Jamel Shabazz and Frank Morrison can agree that 5Pointz is a testament that one good thing can be replaced by something great, and the more such acts are practiced the better our world and communities will be. “I’m completely in support of 5Pointz, and grateful that such a place exists” promises Shabazz, and for all his support and documentation we all thank him.

Peace,

Justin Bua Comes to the Defense of 5Pointz…

By Madame Margherite

For years, author and fine artists, Justin Bua, has been an advocate for the things he loves. Hip-hop, urban art and animal rights are just a few spectrums where Bua’s impact has made a huge difference.

Now Bua, currently residing in LA, comes to the defense of 5Pointz, the largest legal graff site in the world, and an iconic structure of urban art across the globe. Plans to destroy our building have caught the attention of artists and supporters across the entire country to say the least, and have sent a shockwave furiously blanketing our youth and culture.

“5Pointz is a graffiti mecca that provides an outlet for artists who otherwise might not have a place to paint a piece legally. It is a true graffiti museum, showcasing the art form the way it is meant to be viewed, while providing an aesthetic to the neighborhood unlike any other. It would be a great loss if it were to be taken away from the community.” Bua exclaims.

Many years ago a mental institution was eliminated not far from where Justin Bua lived at the time. The mentally ill residents of the facility were released on to the New York streets where they found themselves lost and homeless.

Witnessing this tragic catastrophe Bua decided to illuminate the heartless abuse of the homeless and distraught victims by portraying them in his paintings and drawings. Now a generation later, the safe haven for people in desperate need of a creative outlet, and sincere love for this diverse art form and culture face the possibility of being without a dwelling for their thoughts and home for their works as well.
“If home is where your heart is at, and this is where my heart is, then 5Pointz is home to me” one supporter says. Hopefully, with the continuous love, help, and support of giants such as Justin Bua, and fans like those who flood the loading dock each sunny day, perhaps the struggle to hold onto and protect our beloved building won’t be so tough.

We give thanks to Bua and the BUA crew for lending us their support, and we give props to all those who have stood faithfully by our side. You have kept us strong, and continue to allow us to grow stronger.

Winter is here; Keep Your Puppy Warm…

By Madame Margherite

It is official, in most parts of the country the air is brisk to say the least, and in some parts of the country it’s just out right cold. Department stores are stocking up on winter clothing and selling out like crazy, while home owners are switching off the central air and turning on the central heating. But let’s not forget that us humans are not the only ones who get cold this time of year, our pets- despite their fur coats- get chilly as well. Just like us, the chill in the air can lead to sniffles, ear aches, and cold feet. Here are some ways you can prevent your dog from getting sick or being uncomfortable.

Of course indoor renovations can include moving your pet’s doggie bed from in front of the air conditioner to in front of the fireplace and you don’t need anyone to tell you that extra blankets wouldn’t hurt. However people tend to forget that heat rises and your dog doesn’t always stay put under the blanket. Once the morning comes and your pet wants to emerge from under his or her covers they’re going to feel the breeze in the air.

Well there’s a simple solution to solving this uncomfortable problem. You can get your dog sweaters or some thick shirts. Granted, at first they may squirm a little bit when you try to dress them, but dogs are smart and once they realize that the sweaters keep them warm they’ll be glad to wear them. Just like the recognition dogs have for their collars and leashes; at first they don’t like them but once they associate the leash with their walk they’ll be bringing the leash to you. Small breeds especially appreciate their fashionably fitted dog sweaters, as they get cold much quicker than Golden Retrievers and Collies.

If you have a big furry dog, going for a quick walk around the back yard for a moment or so may not require a couple of layers but dog jackets certainly are important when playing in the snow. Just like children, dogs love to jump around in freshly fallen snow, and just like children dogs loose track of their body temperature. It’s up to you to keep them warm. Dog jackets are easier to put on then sweaters and you only need one or two to get your pet through the winter.

Dog boots are a good idea too at times. Going for long walks, or keeping your dog outside for an extended period of time isn’t a bad thing, but keep in mind that their pads are thick and they won’t feel the cold ground until it’s too late. A dog’s feet need to be warm just like ours do. You know what they say, if your head and feet are cold, you’ll get a cold. Which brings up another point, a hat for your dog might work too if you can manage to keep it on your dog’s head. That might be a challenge though. Dog boots are good for playing in the snow also, but be sure to take them off right away once you’re in the house. Snow and ice can get trapped inside the shoe and you don’t want your pet walking around like that for too long.

If you’re going to keep your dog out for an extended period of time, even with a pair of dog boots, and a dog jacket keep your pet moving and just like in the summer, watch out for your dog over exerting his or herself. One more valuable danger to be aware of is keeping your dog in the car unattended. In the summertime your car becomes stifling and can cause heat stroke for a pet, but in the winter your car turns into an ice box just as quickly and can cause hypothermia. So pick up some dog sweaters, dog jackets, dog boots and a hat! Keep your puppy warm, and enjoy the winter.

Peace,

Pets Need First Aid Too…

By Madame Margherite

The morning news and local papers always have tips and advice on how to protect your family and prepare for catastrophic events but you rarely hear about how to do the same for your pet. They’ll mention first aid kits for children, but what about a first aid kit for dogs? Your pet’s life and health is just as important and valuable as that of the rest of the members in your house hold. In fact if one of the people in your family need first aid assistance they are more likely to be fine than a dog or a cat. The reason simply being that a person can retrieve a bandage or an alcohol swab while an animal cant; therefore it’s up to you to be ready and able to assist your pet in the event of a disaster. We can improvise your animal cant.

There are many types of accidents to consider that may unfortunately consider. The most common and likely nightmare a dog owner is prone to experience is their pet being hit by a car. This type of thing happens all the time and even to the most highly trained and intelligent dogs. Even if you always keep your pet on a leash accidents happen. You may drop the leash, your dog’s collar may become loose, or he or she may simply escape from the back yard or through the front door. All it takes for a dog to dart into traffic is an enticing squirrel or a sudden spook.

If your dog is hit by a car an ambulance will not come to your rescue, but what most people don’t know is that the fire department will. You should always have the direct phone number to your local firehouse saved in your cell phone and land line. While a pet’s injury is an emergency, calling 911 won’t get you the quick response you’ll need to save your dogs life. The second thing to do is grab your dog first aid kit. In there will be an “Emergency First Aid Kit for Dogs Handbook”. This will index the types of emergencies you may be facing and explain what to look for and how to respond.

Another common type of accident that plagues pet owners is a deep wound. Since most dogs don’t wear shoes when they go for walks it’s not unlikely that they’ll step on a piece of glass or other sharp object. For a child you can simply clean the wound and put a band-aid on it, but that won’t work for your furry friend. In your dog first aid kit you’ll find Styptic Powder; this will stop the bleeding almost immediately. This powder can also be used if you clip your pet’s claws too short. A dog first aid kit also contains sterile gauze pads and waterproof self adhesive wrap that will sustain you until you can reach a vets office.

Natural disasters are also something you should prepare for. Food and water are items you should always add to your first aid kit for dogs, and remember to replace these items as they expire. If there’s a catastrophic disaster such as Katrina it may take time for your pet to get assistance, so you’ll want to make sure you have food for them. Purchasing a life preserver for your pet may also be a good idea in the event of a flood, or if you take your pet boating with you as many people often do.

A dog first aid kit contains the main essentials which you may need when faced with an accident, but don’t hesitate to add items to this kit as you feel necessary. Some suggestions might be a list of emergency contacts such as your primary vet, and animal hospital as well as the phone number to an animal loving neighbor or relative who may be able to help out if you’re in a panic.

Other items you might want to consider are snap heating pads, an extra collar and leash and while this may sound silly, a familiar toy can sometimes calm a pet when they are in pain. Never keep your first aid kit short on love, and take good care of your precious pal.

Peace,

His vs Hers : The Perfect Car...

By Madame Margherite

Everyone knows that men and women generally have vastly different ideas of what an ideal car should be. Most men prefer speed and luxury while women often want something large, safe and comfy to prepare for the four children she intends to have. Well who’s to say that you can’t have space, speed, and luxury? Aside from that, is a minivan or Montero Sport really safer and more comfortable than let’s say a corvette? Probably not and here’s why…

Granted, “sports vehicle” refers to a car for those who enjoy the sport of driving, not taking your kids to sporting events such as soccer, but that doesn’t mean cars like that can’t serve such a purpose just as efficiently. In fact, a well maintenance Jaguar will probably get you there faster leaving more time for pregame pep talks.

Safety is always on the forefront of everyone’s mind when choosing a vehicle especially when that vehicle will be used to transport one’s family. So let’s take a look at the all mighty trusted minivan and put it up against one of speed racer’s whips. The 2010 Honda Odyssey, in most poles, was rated the best minivan a mom could buy, ranking 2 out of 7, and scoring a 9.9 in safety; all at a price of roughly $25,000 brand-spanking-new. However, the 2010 Genesis Coupe, a car designed for racing, ranked 3 out of 18, scored a 10.0 in safety, and will cost you $31,000 right out of the showroom. So why is the smaller car safer and more reliable?

We’ll explain; keep in mind that the Hyundai Genesis Coupe has just as many seat belts as the Honda Odyssey, and a specifically features a car seat latch, but unlike the Odyssey, it’s head rests are designed to prevent whiplash. But that’s not what makes this sports car competitively safer.

Air bags are key. It’s true the Honda Odyssey, like most minivans, and SUVs have airbags all throughout the car much like the Genesis Coupe, however, the simple fact is that the interior of the coupe is a tighter space thus offering more protection. If you line a large box with bubble wrap and place a small glass vase in it, then shake it aggressively, chances are you’ll be left with tiny little shards of glass when you open the box. On the other hand, if you take a small box, line it with bubble wrap and place a vase of the same size in it, then shake it up just as aggressively as the last, you are more likely to have an in-tact vase when you take a peek. The same physics apply to the inside of a car with airbags. No matter how big and intimidating your minivan is, it will not protect you and your family from thrashing around inside if your worst fears become a reality and your vehicle flips.

Speaking of which, let’s compare the aerodynamics of a sports utility vehicle verses a sports car. Now there are dozens of aerodynamically designed cars that can cut through tension like a razor blade but to be fair let’s use the 2011 Jaguar XFR for this comparison, while the new Phantom could pose a better argument, you can’t honestly fit five people in it comfortably. For our SUV we’ll use the Cadillac Escalade, a vehicle that commands respect without question. 10 out of 10 reviews put this truck at #1 for best SUV- but that won’t keep all four wheels on the ground when taking a sharp turn, even if you are doing the speed limit.

Granted, it’s not like every time you turn a corner your trucks going to flip, but in a sports vehicle you probably couldn’t roll it if you tried. The element making this possible is called G-force. All pro racers and drivers know very well what this is and depend on it with their lives. G-force is “gravitational force” caused by the acceleration of, in this case, a vehicle. In English, that means that when a vehicle moves quickly essentially, the wind around it becomes dense. This force can either be applied upward or downward depending on the aerodynamics of the object, again in this case, the vehicle. The less space between the ground and the bottom of a vehicle, the less air can be trapped underneath it causing the G-force to be applied downward pressing the car closely to the earth.

SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade have giant wheels allowing a large amount of space between the ground and the bottom of the vehicle. Even if you customize your truck to have the smallest wheels it can harness, and keep it as low to the ground as possible you will still have at least ten inches between you and the ground. This allows for a lot of air and pressure to become trapped under your vehicle, therefore the faster you go, the more force is applied upward from the ground to the car. In addition to that, the height and weight of the truck make it difficult to take sharp turns, that’s why a driver must slow down rather than speed up when turning a corner.

Now the Jaguar is designed to utilize this force with features such as the rear spoiler and large front air intakes. These features cause the force of the wind to be applied from the top down so even on sharp turns and slippery roads, the wheels will never lift up. You literally have to drive it off a cliff to get it to flip. You get the point.

The concrete truth is you’re safer doing a buck-ten in a Lamborghini Gallardo than you are doing sixty-five on the highway with a Jeep. And the price difference between the two isn’t that far off. Both fully loaded, The Cadillac Escalade will run you about $67,000 while the Jaguar XFR is about $80,000.

Finally, let’s talk comfort and cup holders. Yes, women love cup holders, especially those who need lots of coffee to stay focused throughout the day. Whenever talking luxury, it’s mandatory we mention a Benz; the car make so beautiful it’s no wonder she has a woman’s name. Any Mercedes-Benz can make the LX 570 feel like a school bus, no offence to Lexus, but let’s narrow it down to two models; the E550 and the CLS 550. All three of these models feature approximately 382 horsepower 5.5 liter V8 engines and they’re all beautiful. The difference is in the inside.

While the CLS 550 only seats 4 and the E550 seats 5, both Benz’ have heated, leather seats and feature driver drowsiness monitors in addition to four-zone climate control. The Lexus has a DVD player in the back and a cool box in the front to keep your drinks cool- not ideal for coffee. As the Benz lacks the cool box, it does feature Sirius Radio and Traffic, as well as 6 disc changer DVD/CD players in the back and duel ambient lighting. It doesn’t get much more comfortable than that. As for price, you’ll pay no less than $77,000 for the Lexus LX 570; the Benz CLS 550 will run $74,000 and the E550 is about $57,000. The choice should be clear.

If you want comfort and safety, ditch the death traps and get a Benz. So other sports cars raise some concerns about price? Buy it used, care for it well, and it will still out last any gas-guzzler you can find. Have fun shopping and drive safely… in a sports car.

Peace,

Meeting of Styles Hosted by 5 Pointz Turns Out to be Huge…

By Madame Margherite

This year’s Meeting of Styles hosted by the infamous 5 Pointz arts center accommodated over 110 artists from all over the world. Locals like NME, Cortez, Zimad, and Hoacs joined forces with international masters as well.

Spots on the walls of 5 Pointz were booked over a month in advance, and not one spot was left untouched. Every last piece was spectacular, and the event itself was larger than life. Certainly not an event anyone would want to miss in the future.

Aside from the artists who came out to contribute their skills, supporters and spectators came flocking in by the dozens. During live performances by Shiesty Heights, Bisco Smith and Craig G the loading dock was packed to capacity with excited viewers. The day was beautiful, the performances were dope, the art was amazing but most of all, the atmosphere was fresh and peaceful.

Texas native, Sloke, came all the way from Austen just to be a part of this spectacular event.

There was nothing but love and creativity thriving on the streets surrounding the 200,000 square foot building in Long Island City. NME, one of the Pioneering 5 Pointz supporters says that in his 20 years of graff writing he has been to events of equal magnitude but that this year’s Meeting of Styles was definitely one of the dopest events he’s been a part of. “No problems on a beautiful day” as he describes it, and that’s just the way it should be.

He pointed out the pleasantries of seeing artists, both foreign and local who he might not have other wise run into come together and share their skills side by side each other. The atmosphere was perfect and everyone came in peace to have a great time as expected. You can’t ask for more than that.

Hope to see you next year.

Peace,

2011’s Supercars are Super Sexy…

By Madame Margherite

Next year the elite car manufactures are certainly not depriving the world of fast cars with sharp looks, but everyone’s got their own idea of what a sexy car should look like. If you ask me, I say Shelby is the hottest chick in town but Mustang fans say the SMS 302 rivals her speed and beauty. Perhaps there’s a good argument but it wouldn’t be fair to spit out a bias opinion without evaluating all the top supercars joining us this coming year.

The market is aggressively open to powerful cars pushing their way through the competition this time around, taking the automotive industry up more than a few notches to say the least. McLaren, Ferrari, Bugatti and oh yes, Mercedes all have their engines revved up ready to smoke the track, but what would a supercar list be without a Lamborghini? Boring, that’s what; 2011 introduces the Lamborghini Gallardo 570-4 Superleggera, yet another bone chilling display of aerodynamic beauty.

The Superleggera of next year is as close to a street legal race car as they come; perfect for you So Cal dessert folk. She’s 154lbs lighter than the last Lambo, and rocks a 570 horsepower 5.2-liter V10 engine. Naturally she’s green to symbolize the envy reflected in the eyes of all those who get the pleasure of seeing this bad girl wiz by.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is the Ettore bloodline’s latest creation, and alive she is indeed. Mastering their legacy of combining mechanical excellence with pure artistic beauty, this vehicle was built for racing in style. There are too many modifications made to this design to mention in this particular article, but to list a few, here you have it. Four enlarged turbochargers and bigger intercoolers have been installed to boost the power of the 16-cylinder engine, which gets its air from two NACA ducts integrated into the roof, rather than from scoops above the engine.

The front air intakes have been reshaped and expanded, with the lower one extending elegantly around the sides to the wheel arch that, combined with the double diffuser and a centrally arranged exhaust system gives this model a sportier look. Additionally, slightly raised main-spring travel, stronger stabilizers, and new shock absorbers with the complex architecture developed specifically for racing cars is the reason this vehicle maintains safety at maximum speed giving this car noticeably more precise control of the wheels. Really, what more could you ask for?

Back to the hottest girl on the block, this year’s Shelby Ultimate Aero is stirring up some controversy; some say she’s ugly. One thing that can’t be denied is that this one is a record breaker. This bad girl is light on her wheels and quick to tear it up. With her twin turbo, weighing in at 2,750lbs (unstripped) she reached a top speed of 257.11mph on pass one and achieved 254.55 on the return when Washington State temporarily closed a two lane highway so that your highness could burn some rubber. That’s a record in case you didn’t know. Not to mention the Ultimate Aero achieved 0-60 mph in 2.78 seconds and 1/4 Mile in 9.90 seconds at 144 mph. With performance like that who needs looks? You can’t see her when she flies by you anyway.

Shelby’s rival this year is of course a Mustang. Offering two versions of the Ford Mustang GT SMS 302, one will be the 4V variant sports a naturally aspirated V-8 engine with a 5.0L displacement, the other is the SC which makes use of an SMS 296 Supercharger. The SMS 302 4V with the naturally aspirated V8 will have an output of 440 horsepower and a torque of 400 pound feet due to a 4-valve head design, improved pulley drive, high flow design exhaust system, performance filtration, and optimal fuel calibration and does 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, and 1/4 Mile in 13.5 seconds at a speed of 116 mph. The 302 SC boasts of 535 horsepower and torque of 450 pound feet. This Mustang can speed up from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds reaching the 1/4 mile in 12.1 seconds at 119 mph. Blah, blah, blah… the truth is she’s pretty.

But so is the Ferrari FX70 rumored to be housing a twin turbo V12 at about 800 horsepower and the McLaren MP4 12C, a supercar at it’s best. This has been a long awaited car and supposedly the template for the MP4-12C has actually been the McLaren F1, the mid-engine supercar powered by a BMW V12 that was built between 1993 and ’98. Keep your eyes peeled for these elite beauties. Speaking of which…

Have Mercy! The day has come; in 2011 Mercedes finally introduces their first ever supercar, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG also referred to as the New Gullwing. Mercedes is keeping tight-lipped when it comes to the looks of this car keeping her undoubtedly extravagant beauty a well kept secret, but what we do know is that this vehicle is powered by a 6.2 liter 32 valve V8 engine that makes 563 horsepower, and 479 lbs of torque. It includes a new magnesium intake with 8 separate velocity stacks; two electronically controlled throttle plates that feed the intake, and a new equal length exhaust manifold that reduces backpressure. Like always Mercedes goes big and rides smooth. Aren’t you just glad this supercar is finally here?

Peace,

Old School “Poet”...

By Madame Margherite

Poetry at 5 Pointz? Well not quite, Poet is one of the old school train writers who has had the pleasure of taking part in the Meeting of Styles held at 5 Pointz a few years ago.

The Meeting of Styles is not a competition, rather than an event where graff artists from all around the world, Montreal, New York, France, etc… come to paint and eat together meshing their styles side by side. The diversity of such an event makes for a great culturally artistic experience. It’s one of the only times artists of such different styles get to come together and collaborate in a peaceful environment.

Taking place at 5 Pointz was indeed an honor for all parties involved, including the venue itself. The Meeting of Styles contributes to the greater picture of aerosol art around the world, and has provided an immense opportunity for this art form to dramatically submerge. Just the idea that such an event takes place is an impressive stepping stone for graff art. The value of bringing so many artists together is immeasurable.

Poet, born in Brooklyn, and raised in Queens was familiar with 5 Pointz prior to the Meeting of Styles taking place there but had not visited since the transformation from “Phun Phactory” to 5 Pointz. It was this event that was responsible for this veteran’s return. You see, Poet, like many old school writers find that a place where aerosol is legal takes away from what graffiti is, in fact that’s not graffiti at all to many artists across the world. And perhaps it isn’t but none the less Poet agrees that there are pros and cons to this new form of legal graff.

He takes us into a radically different point of view then that of those who so whole heartedly love 5 Pointz and what it represents. Many will agree that there is a clear line between art and graffiti. While both are forms of creative expression, it’s the act of illegally marking ones territory that appeals to a graffiti artists, thus the reason culture considers such artists vandals. They are in fact vandalizing property when painting or spraying in or on an unauthorized location. But at 5 Pointz, all who mark the walls are granted permits by Meres prior to their painting.

To some, that’s just plain art. Poet grew up in a time and place where legalizing graffiti was simply unheard of and unimaginable. He spent his younger years sneaking into train yards painting trains, street bombing, and climbing out of windows to mark up the sides of buildings with stolen paint; a thrill that can only be captured when up to mischief. However, now as an adult Poet admits the stupidity of such activities. Not only were his actions physically dangerous, but they could have landed him behind bars; and for what? Vandalism? Hardly a good reason to tarnish ones future as many might agree.

Despite Poet’s maturity he still finds the transformation of graff art from illegal, to legal to be a bit “weird”. He states “this art form came from the streets and should stay that way”. While poet no longer involves himself in illegal activity, it just goes to show that just because you provide people with a legal outlet for their creativity, that doesn’t mean they wont continue to express themselves illegally.

Not to be confused, Poet makes it clear that he has great respect for Meres and what he has built upon the walls of 5 Pointz however he makes another point about graffiti. As this art form has gained popularity advertisements have used graff images without the consent of the pertaining artists and capitalized off of their work. Of course the reason such artists have yet to receive a single red cent is due to the fact that their true identity remains a mystery but none the less this has stirred up disputes among the aerosol community. At 5 Pointz, one could gain recognition for their work—one of the many pros of the establishments Poet points out.

Though he does not completely agree with Meres’ vision, he believes that it is a good one as long as it can last. A place for people to express themselves is in fact a valuable asset to the art community. The more individuals that see the work, the more graffiti can generate a fan base, and that is alright with him. Poet signs off with a message to the old school community “it’s time for hometown people to speak up and tell their stories; 5 Pointz is the Big Apple of graff!”

Thanks to Poet for an old school perspective, and his contribution to the rise of graffiti.

Peace,
–Marg

Sporty Doggy Spirit…

By Madame Margherite

As far back as dogs and clothes have existed simultaneously people have been dressing up their pets; it’s just one more form of personal expression. Sure doggy sweaters have practical uses such as keeping your dog warm in the winter, but let’s be honest… the real reason we dress up our dogs is because it’s cute and fun. While typically Halloween is the most popular time to find the perfect attire for our pups a whole new trend is on the rise. More and more people are converting their dogs into sports fans.

After all, it’s not uncommon for the family dog to come along to a baseball game at your local diamond. More and more dogs are adapting to a sports themed look to match their enthusiastic nature to chase a ball. Everyone knows that our pets love to fetch baseballs, footballs, sticks, basketballs and Frisbees so why not dress them up like the sports loving pooches that they are? Surely dogs have the right to self expression as much as we do.

Today it’s common to see a Poodle rocking a Mets color, or his favorite football team’s jersey with pride. Okay, okay, so maybe your genius Jack Russell can’t tell the difference between the Jets and the Giants, but you can certainly make him appear to have chosen a side. In fact this trend has become so popular that the Major League Baseball Association and the National Football League have actually designed entire lines of clothing, collars, leashes, toys and even booties for each of their teams. They even come in all sizes making them suitable for any breed of dog.

But why is it so important to so many people to accessorize their pets? Perhaps, or probably it’s because it’s in our nature to display what’s important to us, and we like to include our pets in this process just as we include them in almost everything else in our lives. Our dogs are the first to kiss our faces as we wake up, they wait patiently beside us at the kitchen table, and the curl up next to us on the couch to watch our favorite shows. Naturally we would also want them to share our love for our home teams.

So maybe this trend of dressing up our dogs in sports attire and jazzing them up with accompanying accessories could be fun. If you haven’t tried it yet, perhaps you should. Most likely your pets will take pride in their new gear, just be sure to keep an eye out for rival fans in the doggy park.

Peace,

Topaz: The “Roc” of 5 Pointz…

By Madame Margherite

Topaz, also known as Lord Roc is undoubtedly one of the valuable corner stones of 5 Pointz’s foundation. Not only has he contributed years of his music, performance, and artistic skills to the atmosphere of this amazing graffiti Mecca but he’s unconditionally provided his support as well.

As one of the key members of the 5 Pointz board of directors Topaz dedicates much of his time ensuring that operations run smoothly on location at 5 Pointz and on the 5ptz.com website.

As an artist Topaz balances many facets of art including graphic design, video production, aerosol art, paint, drawing, and of course hip-hop. Both a producer and an MC he has gained surreal popularity among his peers as Lord Roc and continues to climb as he pursues his passions. “Art and music go hand in hand” says Topaz. With five artistically talented brothers it’s no surprise that he possesses the skills he so generously shares with the world. However that skill was not easy to hone, Topaz spent countless hours perfecting his art and music over years and years of creativity.

At times he found himself almost discouraged as many of his legal murals were painted over in years prior to the development of 5 Pointz; a place where art is guaranteed to remain protected as long as deemed necessary by show runner Meres. In 1991 things changed for the lives of both Topaz and Meres as MAGIC brought them together. MAGIC standing for More American Graffiti In Control, the two artists found a common ground as members of this program where they met. The program was designed to help protect aerosol artists by providing young people with tools and safe havens where they can freely express themselves. Much like what 5 Pointz is today.

This union was just the starting point of what prospered into a strong personal bond as well as the development of an empire of art. While the former “Phun Phactory” gradually transformed into 5 Pointz, Topaz simultaneously began do build an empire of his own; LordRoc Multimedia. Today it is very clear that 5 Pointz and LordRoc are very much a part of one another and that both establishments help motivate and sustain the other. Topaz has used his music to bring a grander audience to 5 Pointz just as 5 Pointz has contributed to LordRoc’s Popularity in return.

“Everything I do around the board is based around Hip-Hop” claims Topaz; “Hip-Hop will always be incorporated in my work. My main goal in life is to make the world a better place.” A goal he has certainly achieved time and time again. As one of the pioneers of this breath taking establishment Topaz has witnessed first hand the power of art, and how far the aerosol culture has come. Ten years ago it was hard to believe, if not impossible, that graffiti would become more than an art form, but a business as well.

Places like 5 Pointz and visionaries such as Topaz are responsible for life changing achievements made within the graff art community. Today graffiti is featured in film, media, and advertising, and is much the focus of design when it comes to sneakers, apparel, personal persona, and even photo shoots for top notch models and photographers. Thanks to the efforts and passions of aerosol artists, graffiti has become a world wide inspiration. “Seeing this place develop had changed my outlook and direction in life; this place has helped me realize that I can put my art in the forefront” Topaz declares.

Much respect and thanks go out to LordRoc for his continuous and unconditional support for the 5 Pointz mission. This magical place clearly would not be the same without him.

Peace,
–Marg
